Dead Reckoning

Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

Release Date: May 3,2011
Publisher: Gollancz
Pages: Hardcover (336 pgs)
Age Group: Adult
Series: Sookie Stackhouse #11
Genre: Paranormal/Vampire
Author Website: http://www.charlaineharris.com/
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Description: "With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board . . . "

Review: This book did not have a dull moment. I found myself laughing and shocked throughout the whole book.

The book starts off with a firebombing at Merlotte's. I found this shocking because Sam is a lovable characther and I felt bad for him that these horrible things are happening to him. Even though he is getting dealt a crappy card when it comes to Merlotte's, I am happy to see that he is in a loving relationship with Jannalynn. She is not my favorite, but its nice to see Sam Happy.

In this book we see a softer side to Pam which I did not care for too much. Pam is one of my favorite characters in this series, and I was upset to read that she just wasn't her normal self in this book.

Dermot and Claude play a big part in this book, and we also get introduce to new people from the Fae World. Also a big secret gets revealed. So things that we learned in the previous books come together in this one to make more sense of the past.

Bubba comes back in this book. He has not been mentioned in a long time, and it was nice to see Bubba back in the mix. I hope he is in the next one more. Also Alcide makes a short appearance as well. I wanted more of him in this book. I'm hoping I get more of him in the next one.

Sookie is the same as always. She has a lot of inner demons of her own that she needs to deal with. A big secret that Eric has gets revealed and it is a game changer for her relationship with Eric. I like how the book ended and it opened up completely for the next book. I'm excited to read how it plays out. These books don't come out fast enough.

Review: Stefan has given up feeding on humans, and he just feeds of animals now. He travels to New York to forget about his brother.

The description in the book is just fantastic. It makes you feel like you are in back in  1864 with them. I love the inner demons Stefan is struggling with. Damon is back  and bringing havoc into Stefan's life. In this book we learn about Klaus and the curse. This is the last installment to the Stefan's Diaries, but I'm hoping they come out with more books in this series because they just scratched the surface.

Description: Set during the Civil War, against a backdrop of grand estates, unimaginable riches, and deadly secrets, three teenagers in Mystic Falls, Virginia enter a torrid love triangle that will span eternity.

Brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore are inseparable until they meet Katherine, a stunning, mysterious woman who turns their world upside down. Siblings turned rivals, the Salvatores compete for Katherine's affection, only to discover that her sumptuous silk dresses and glittering gems hide a terrible secret: Katherine is a vampire. And she is intent on turning them into vampires so they can live together-forever.

Review: I love the Vampire Diaries books, and I also love the TV show. When I discovered this book at a Trueblood convention I just had to read this book. This book takes place in 1864 and gives the back story of Stefan and how he and Damon were turned into Vampires.

This book is such a great read. Stefan in the TV show is a very brooding character. I do love that about him because he is such a caring person. I enjoyed this book because you get to see a darker side of Stefan, and a softer side to Damon.

After reading this book I have a better understanding about Stefan and why he was so dark in the beginning of him becoming a vampire. Also having a better understanding of Damon as a human and how he wanted nothing to do with being a vampire.

Clockwork Angel

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Release Date: August 31, 2010
Publisher: McElderry
Pages: Hardcover (478 pgs)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: The Infernal Devices #1
Genre: Fantasy
Author Website: http://www.cassandraclare.com/
Overall Rating: (5 out of 5 stars)

Description: Magic is dangerous--but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Review: All I can say is this book was amazing! This book made me laugh one moment, and almost made me cry the next from sadness, and the love story.

I fell in love with the main character Tessa. She has a child like presence about her, but she is not naive. She didn't think she was a strong person, but she did not give herself enough credit. This series was based in 1878. The women in that time are to get married, and children, and cater to their husbands. I enjoyed reading about Tessa because she was not one of those women.

If you have read Cassandra Clare's other series The Mortal Instruments, you will notice that Will reminds you a lot like Jace. Will has a lot of witty commentary throughout the book, and he has an I don't care attitude. There is more to Will's story that is not revealed in this book, and I cant wait to find out what it is.

Jem is such a sweetheart, and so warm, and he cares for everyone regardless of who they are. Jem also has a very interesting story of his own, and it was very sad to read. I love the connection that Jem and Tessa have. I hope it blossoms in the next book.

Overall, it was a great book. I'm very excited about this series, and cant wait for Clockwork Prince to come out. This book ended with a great cliffhanger, and I need to know what happens next.

Covet

Covet by J.R. Ward

Release Date: October 29, 2009
Publisher: Signet
Pages: Paperback (474 pgs)
Age Group: Adult
Series: The Fallen Angels #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author Website: http://www.jrward.com/
Overall Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)

Description: Redemption isn't a word Jim Heron knows much about. His specialty is revenge, and to him, sin is all relative. But everything changes when he becomes a fallen angel and is charged with saving the souls of seven people from the seven deadly sins.

Failure is not an option.

Vin DiPietro long ago sold his soul to his business, and he's happy with that- until fate intervenes in the form of a tough talking, Harley-riding, self-professed savior. But then he meets a woman who will make him question his destiny, his sanity, and his heart. Vin has to work with a fallen angel to win her over and redeem his own soul.

Review: I have never read a romance novel before until I picked up J.R. Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood series which was recommended to me. After the first book I was hooked on her writing style. When I found out that she had another series I had to pick it up. This series kinda intertwines with the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. All the minor characters in there are now the main characters in this book. You don't have to read the other series before reading this one.

I have read many books about fallen angels and this one was very different. The main characters Jim died and sent back to earth to save 7 people from the 7 deadly sins because Heaven and Hell are at war with each other. Jim is the only one who can save the people on earth from destruction. I really enjoyed the twist that it gave with the 7 deadly sins.

I didn't think this book was very much a Romance like her other series, but it did have its moments. There was a great love story in this book that I did enjoy very much, she never disappoints in that department. Overall I did enjoy this book very much, and I love J.R. Wards writing. I love how I get lost in the story, and I invest so much in the characters. I'm excited to read the next book to find out who Jim is going to save next with his gang of fallen angels.

Dead is Not an Option

Dead is Not an Option
Release Date: May 2,2011
Publisher: Graphia
Pages: Paperback (240 pgs)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Dead is #5
Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal
Author Website: www.marleneperez.com
Overall Rating: (5 out of 5 start)

Description: It’s springtime of senior year, and psychic sleuth Daisy Giordano is preparing to say goodbye to Nightshade High. But no college acceptance letters have arrived yet, and she’s beginning to worry about where she’ll end up come fall—and if it will be anywhere near her boyfriend, Ryan. But that’s not the only uncertainty Daisy’s dealing with. There’s a vamps-versus-shifters war going on in Nightshade, and things are so tense that there is talk of canceling the prom. The conflict is carrying over to the Giordano home, since Rose and Daisy are both dating werewolves and Poppy’s new boyfriend is a vampire.

Can the paranormal community in Nightshade finally find peace? And will Daisy and her friends survive graduation? All of these questions and more are answered in the latest explosive installment in the Dead Is series.

Review: This is the latest installment of the Dead is series. Its such a fun book to read because of all the paranormal activity that goes on. Also I love the fact that in Nightshade you don't have to hide who you are.

There is a conflict between the Werewolves and the Vampires. In Daisy fashion she has to solve the issue between the two, since her and Rose are dating werewolves, and Poppy is dating a vampire.

School comes to a close, and Ryan and Daisy need to figure out what they are going to do next, but it doesn't help that Daisy hasn't heard from any colleges yet. While reading the book, and going through her ups and downs I'm routing for Daisy and Ryan to be together. I love it when the girl can get the guy of her dreams.

Throughout the books you see all the characters grow so much, and they have grown on me. This is the last book in the series, and it was sad for me to read because I love the characters so much. I got a little teary eyed because there was a sad and shocking moment in the book. Other than that, it had a great ending to the series. I know its the last book, but I'm still hoping she writes another one because she can still continue the series.

Overall great series. Would recommend to anyone that wants a quick read, cute story, and paranormal activity.

Description: As the creepy little town of Nightshade prepares to celebrate its two hundredth anniversary — on Halloween, of course — many of its paranormal residents are receiving mysterious blackmail letters. Psychic teen Daisy Giordano and her sisters set out to find who is behind the threats. But launching an investigation isn’t easy for Daisy with her overprotective father watching her every move. Though she’s happy to have him back after the years he spent being held captive by an anti-paranormal group called the Scourge, Dad is having a difficult time adjusting to home life — and the fact that his little girl is now a senior in high school. He even disapproves of Daisy’s boyfriend, Ryan.

Ryan, meanwhile, to Daisy’s dismay, has been considering some faraway colleges thanks to the advice of Nightshade High’s new guidance counselor. Can their relationship take the strain?

And Daisy’s got even more on her plate: A talented amateur cook, she has won cooking lessons with celebrity chef Circe Silvertongue. After nosing around (with a little help from Circe’s pet pig), Daisy begins to suspect that the temperamental chef has got more secrets than just her ingredients .

Review: The fourth installment of the Dead is series does not a disappoint. In this book Daisy's father returns after being missing for many years, and he is protective as ever because to him she is still his little girl, and not the girl that is graduating high school and looking at colleges.

Everything seems fine again in Nightshade and everyone is getting ready for the Midnight Ball, and celebrating the 200th anniversary of Halloween. On top of that Daisy takes cooking lessons she won with a celebrity cook, and it wouldn't be Nightshade if something was not up with the celebrity chef. Mysterious letter are also being delivered to the paranormal families in Nightshade which causes Daisy to be curious and figure out whats going on.

This book was just fun to read. You see that she has a great relationship with her family, and now that her dad is back she wants to build that relationship again. Its not your normal young adult book. Its not dark throughout the whole book. It's just refreshing.

Description: Something very strange starts happening in Nightshade the summer that the eldest Giordano sister, Rose, gets a job working at Dr. Franken's research laboratory. People are starting to see double. Doppelgängers of Nightshade residents are popping up all over town. Daisy, Rose and Poppy think it's a coincidence, until the rumors start that their father, who disappeared several years ago, has been spotted in town.

Meanwhile, Daisy's beau, Ryan is spending all of his time training for football, and like the other guys on the team, he's grown enormous almost overnight. Samantha Devereux's boyfriend's neck has doubled in size since school ended. Could the football players be resorting to extreme measures to win?

Between summer jobs, sugar rushes, and beach parties, the Giordano girls get to the bottom of these mysteries and more.

Review: Things get even stranger in Nightshade. I enjoyed this book a lot because now the Giordano girls have summer jobs, and who can't relate to working over the summer. No one wants to work a summer job when they rather enjoy being a teenager.

The author always surprises me with what happens to Daisy in each book. The strange factor has doubled in this book. Not only to Daisy but also with Ryan. Daisy always freaks out about the strange things, but I love how she handles the situation, and how she is calm about everything.

I'll try not to give anything away. I have read many books like theses, but this was the first book I've heard to the term doppelgangers. It was very refreshing to read her spin on it.

Pages: Paperback (175 pgs)

Series: Dead is #2
Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal

Overall Rating: (5 out of 5 stars)

Description: Welcome to Nightshade, California a small town full of secrets. It s home to the psychic Giordano sisters, who have a way of getting mixed up in mysteries. During their investigations, they run across everything from pom-pom- shaking vampires to shape-shifting boyfriends to a clue-spewing jukebox. With their psychic powers and some sisterly support, they can crack any case! There s a gorgeous new guy at Nightshade High: Duke Sherrad, a fortune-teller claiming to have descended from Gypsies. Even though shes psychic herself, Daisy is skeptical of Duke s powers. But when a teacher who was the subject of one of his predictions ends up dead, she begins to wonder if Duke is the real deal after all.

Maybe if Daisy can track down the teachers killer, she can find out the truth. The only trouble is, all signs point to the murderer being of the furry persuasion. Is Daisy any match for a werewolf? Maybe she is . . . in more ways than she bargained for!

Review: In Dead is the New Black ends with everything being well in Nightshade. Daisy got the guy, who happens to be Ryan. Daisy and Samantha happen to become friends again.

In Dead is a State of Mind a mysterious new student Duke comes to Nightshade. Duke is around Daisy as much as he can. Goes to the same places she does to be around her. Its a cute little love triangle because her boyfriend Ryan is not happy about it.

In the midst of a new student in school, Ryan is acting really strange towards Daisy and Prom is just around the corner. She doesn't know if Ryan is going to ask her. Turns out that Ryan has a secret, but hes not sure if he can tell Daisy.

A teacher dies and Daisy is on the case again. She enlists her two sisters to help solve this case. I love the relationship Daisy has with them. I always wanted an older sister, and I just imagine that this is how it would be with them. The banter they have, borrowing of the clothes, and the bond that they share regardless of their differences.

I feel for Daisy because she can be insecure at times, and I can relate to that. But in the end it seems to work itself out, and Daisy is reassured that everything is ok, and should have nothing to worry about. Daisy is a lot stronger then she thinks, and can handle anything that comes her way.
